Technology
From the forest to the finished product, Gorman Bros. utilizes the latest technology to create the finest boards.

Our goal is to increase the amount of lumber recovered from each tree we harvest.

Today we can recover 30% more lumber from the same number of trees than we were able to 10 years ago.

Gorman Bros. has done this by continually reinvesting in new technologies.

Thin Kerf Edger
Once the round log has been “squared up”, it is sent to the edger (also known as a “gang saw”). This machine has a series of saw blades side-by-side to rip the cant (squared log) into boards.

Technological advances have allowed the use of thinner and thinner saw blades that, in turn, reduce the loss of fibre as sawdust and thereby ensure greater recovery of lumber.

These advanced saws are so precise that the variation in board thickness averages .007 (7/1000) of an inch!

Drying Technology
Advances in the scientific understanding of how moisture leaves wood and improvements in the equipment used to accomplish this have made it possible to improve not only the grade of the boards, but the quality and stability as well.

Kiln
Gorman Bros utilizes over 20 dry kilns. Using a low temperature and slow drying schedule, we are able to produce a more stable board than those dried in the industry standard high temperature, fast-drying kiln.

The benefit of a low-heat, longer drying process is very little or no stress in the boards. Board stress, such as warping and twisting, results when water is forced out too quickly during the drying process.

Molder Technology
Lumber is commonly finished with a planer that “shaves” the rough surface of the material, turning it into a relatively smooth surfaced product. This equipment was designed to allow for the great variation in the thickness of rough lumber that comes from older sawmills.

At Gorman Bros. we have chosen to use a molder to finish our boards. These machines were designed to do mill work (moldings and finely finished products). We have created a whole new level of smoothness for our customers.

With the addition of The Gorman Edge, we have created the equivalent of a sanded board.

Finger Jointing
Trimends are recovered from the sawmill and planer and presented to the finger jointer. The finger jointer profiles interlocking “fingers” into each end and applies glue to the finger. The short pieces are then pressed together to create long boards.
